Seagate Launches Hybrid Hard Drive ‘Era’
Seagate Technology today announced it will begin shipping hybrid notebook drives in large volumes. Hybrid drives combine the large capacities of hard drives with a small amount of flash memory to deliver faster boot times, improved performance, greater reliability and lower power consumption. Seagate has seen up to 50% lower power consumption in testing.
Seagate Unveils 250GB Notebook Hard Drive
Seagate announced the Momentus 5400.4, a 250GB notebook hard drive. The Momentus 5400.4 uses perpinducular magnetic recording (PMR) technology to cram data on just two platters.
Toshiba Announces 320GB Notebook Drives
Toshiba announced it will begin producing the world’s highest capacity notebook drives. The MK3252GSX stores 320GB of data and spins at 5,400 RPM. The new Toshiba drives edges out Fujitsu’s 300GB model for highest capacity of any 2.5-inch drive.
SanDisk Announces 64 GB Notebook Solid State Drives
SanDisk introduced a 64GB Solid State Drive today at Computex. SanDisk 1.8-inch UATA 5000 and 2.5-inch SATA 5000 SSD products have been available in 32GB versions for several months.
WD Passport Drives Bumped to 250GB
Western Digital announced a 250GB capacity Passport portable drive today. The USB-powered pocket drive is significantly larger than WD’s previous offerings. The new WD Passsport 250GB weighs less than four ounces and is powered by USB.
