A how-to going over performance tweaks for low-end portables (like most netbooks) running common OS' would be handy. When I got my Q1U running Vista there was a wealth of information on how to make it much more usable, but it was scattered randomly across the internet. I'm not sure I could find all the tweaks I did to get it working as it is again if I did a reformat.

I would love if Notebooks.com could host a centralized repository of service manuals for laptops. Whenever a friend's laptop breaks down and I get called in to fix it, I have to spend 15-20 minutes just searching for service manuals so I can safely de-construct it. If I knew I could find it on Notebooks.com, my life would be much easier.

A great article would be Backup Basics for Beginners. It would be wonderful to be able to point friends and relatives to such an article (written in easily understandable terms), rather than me doing the backup for them! Or worse, they don't backup at all and end up very frustrated somewhere down the road.

Instead of simply an article, I would be interested in having your site ask for submissions of how different people have their home networks setup; what works and doesn't work. Remembering to back up is easy, but how exactly do we use that back up if our computer crashes and we get that black screen of death. Most people it seems know so much more about computers than I do, so this may be totally irrelevant. But, I would like easy articles on how to understand the codes when a computer crashes and how to fix all of the minor and major problems that arise. The ones that come from viruses - how to remove them myself -, how to fix a bad driver, etc. I am clueless when it comes to a problem on my computer. I don't even know if I am telling what I would like to learn right. Well I need a dummied down way to take care of laptops mostly. That way if I don't win a new one I can fix this one so it doesn't crash on a tri-hourly schedule. And if I did get a new one, I would be able to care for it better. :D
  • Tiffany

OK, I admit my ineptitude but I do not know how to add something like extra memory to my laptop or whatever else I can do to actually make it process faster. I need an article that explains how to take a basic, inexpensive laptop and improve it a little at a time as I can afford it.

I am not going to pretend I am some kind of tech guru, because I clearly am not. I am just a person who uses her computer literally 24/7 because I am a writer and I truly need a portable computer that I can rely on to get my work done, and I need this so very badly. The HP Envy would be an answer to my prayers, and one "How to Article" I would love to read is how to make sure when you purchase a brand new computer, the steps you need to take to keep it working just as if it were brand new. You could write a series of articles on all the different "tune up" type tasks we need to make sure we do to keep our computers working effectively and efficiently.

I realize that there are some very technical people posting here, but reality is many of us are just ordinary end users who use their computers 24/7 and want to make sure they keep on ticking, so to speak!

Thank you again for another virtual raffle ticket! You rock!

I know there a lot of tech/computer blogs but they are typically written for more experienced users.
  • Kristin Wilkinson
This might sound silly or newbie-ish, but there is soooo much on your computer...and I think most people don't even know what's there. Like different settings, programs, etc...I think that it would be useful to review the stuff that we have already (for example, in Control Panel...how much does the average computer user access? About 3 of those features?? Do most people even know what the rest of the stuff is?)
  • Bambi M
I'd love to learn more about laptop maintenance. Not just the software, but the hardware side too - what's the best way to clean it? What can I (as a newbie) remove and replace when I'm inside it? How can I make it cooler?

I would love to know how hackers can gain access to your computer from another computer? How is that possible? The same goes for spam or cookies... how are they able to get on your computer without downloading anything but by just visiting a site? It would be great to know what to do to eliminate the risk (if possible) or ways to avoid it happening at all.

    Thank you!
  • Andrew
These have certainly been mentioned already: An article on security, including what is and isn't necessary, and the resources that the security software eats up. Also, an article on migrating to a new computer, or when doing a clean OS install.

how to boot up faster, what startup programs do I really need
  • Susan
I would also love to know how to keep my laptop cool without having to add some kind of extra bulky appliance to it.
  • Definitelyhow to upgrade. Even if a laptop is just 6 months old, chances are it is already out of date. I'd love to get the lowdown on adding RAM, changing out internal hard drives or adding extra hard drives, adding or upgrading graphics cards, etc. I have tinkered with desktop PCs for years, but I have never cracked open a laptop, and I confess I feel quite intimidated by the thought. A good article would give me the confidence to "do it myself".
  • ellen b.
What’s your idea for a Notebooks.com how-to article? Is there anything you’d like to learn how to do with your PC?

Likely noobish, but an article about how best to adapt a laptop so a person with say a mobilty problem could best move away from a PC to a laptop.

For example, my Father in Law has tremors, most laptops have a touch type 'mouse' 'cursor' thing. Without spending alot of money, a USB mouse helped alot because the shaking isnt as problematic.

Article for USB mouse types, or ways to make the cursor more user friendly. Maybe which laptops are the easiest to use?
  • As far-fetched as it must sound to most of you, I am a brand new, first-time notebook owner. In the last couple of weeks, we set up a wireless router for the first time. I really don't know if I should be doing anything special for security (the wireless network has a password - is that enough?). I don't really know any of the special things about laptops (like what the function keys do). I know some of this is very specific to model, but of course it didn't come with a manual. Is it okay that I plug in my laptop every night, even if I didn't run the battery all the way down? Should I run it down deliberately once in a while? Really basic beginner stuff is what I need.
  • Winston
I would love to learn how to how to upgrade laptop components and how to sync file between multiple computers.

Well nowadays with all of the different way we can "go online" with, I'd like to see more topics about the wireless network security. Scanning the area where I live I've been able to find at least 5 unsecured networks to use and abuse at will. Come on people, wake up and realise that having unsecured home networks is just asking for trouble!
  • PaulY
I know there's some way to set up hardware profiles to do this kind of thing, but I've never really explored it since I'm lazy. Anyway, I'd really like to know how best to get a laptop to automatically sense and respond to a change in environment. For example, when I'm hooked up to an external monitor, automatically change to a higher resolution or switch to dual-monitor mode. When I attach a wired connection, turn off wireless and vice-versa. When I attach a USB mouse, turn off the trackpad. You know, all of those steps required to transition from home to on-the-go to work that are painful to do repetitively.

I would like to know the best/easiest way to create a home network between Windows 7 and Windows Vista PC's.

I know that if they're all running Windows 7, there's no problem because you can just use the HomeGroup feature. But as far as I know, Vista does not recognize HomeGroups, so networking is a bit trickier. A good how-to on this subject would be very helpful, especially since the HP Envy 15 comes with Windows 7! ;-)

  • Michael Hana
I'm a computer technician and salesman, so there's not as much that I typically need to know without me figuring it out myself. However, I think one of the things most users don't know that is helpful in today's multi-computer households is how to set up a network file and printer share. Though Windows 7 makes it easier with homegroups, its not as easy when going cross platform. I think it wold be helpful to show how to create a network file share and printer share cross platform, like with a household with windows 7, Vista and XP computers.

I would like to know what programs I can delete and what programs I can remove from the startup menu. Sharing One Laptop

In my family, "downsizing" has meant reducing our stable of computers from six down to just one. As a one computer family, my wife and I share a single laptop from which we both do all of our personal and work-related computing. There are hardware (i.e. adding as much RAM as possible), software (i.e. programs to seek out duplicate files), and behavioral (i.e. closing programs that you're not actively using) tactics we've embraced to make this sharing go as smoothly as possible. It works well enough for us that we've decided that, once we can afford a second computer, we'll probably buy one in an alternative form factor and share that one too.

I'd love to see an article written from the standpoint of how to guide that explores efficient and effective laptop sharing between two or more people. There's a lot more to doing it well than people might realize.

I use my desktop at home, my lappy on the go, my netbook when I want to punish myself (I hate that piece of crap), and a few various work computers. I have to manually setup bookmarks/favorites on each computer and it becomes a pain in the butt. I know there are programs that will do it for you, but in my experience they don't work well. I'd also like to learn how to make an easy file transfer connection from work to home without going thru the hassle of emailing myself things and checking on the computer that I want to receive the file. Also, I don't want a VPN. Also, what is the best codec/software for playing movies to maximize battery life while maintaining picture quality? Is there an easy way to use a laptop as a HTPC while I'm home and during the night, but keep it portable while I'm on the go?

I'd love to learn more about hardware repair and replacement so I don't have to shell out major money whenever something goes fizzle. If you could address some of the commonly broken things on laptops/notebooks and how to fix them that would be a big help. (i.e. loose keys, blown LCD inverters, etc.)
  • Angela K
I would love a how-to article on how to help reduce the temperature inside my T60 without installing extra cooling devices. I use my laptop on hard surfaces only, and the work I do on it should not cause temperatures to approach 67-69C! However, even as a geek - one very comfortable rooting around in desktops - I'm extremely skitterish about doing much to my laptop. I've always been so frightened of damaging laptops because I know how expensive they can be to replace (unlike desktops, where parts are easily swapped out).

So maybe an article on what kinds of laptop modifications/repairs/cleanings a person with some experience/knowledge can do at home? (with step-by-step guides?) Then contrast those mods/repairs with the kinds that should be done by professionals.

I am BountyHunter338 on Twitter and entered via the Twitter ways as well.

  • kareljack
Well, if I may be so bold, I have two ideas.

    1. An article detailing how to determine which laptop - as far as processor, video card, chipsets etc etc - will best fit the readers individual needs. Some people buy laptops that have more power than they need and others encounter the flipside of that. There are so many different processor designations, video card choices etc etc that the average person finds themselves in a virtual jungle. Supplement that article with information on how to maximize and extend the life of, what is for most, a major purchase.

    2. With Hi-def Tvs and DVRs becoming more prevalent, how about an article showing how to build an easy but highly capable home video network that will allow a person to stream movies to their laptop from any room in the house/apartment. Setup a simple home theater pc/server that has basic dvr capabilities as well as large hard drives to store legal copies of movies. Use the laptop to access the server at any time.

Fully leveraging a laptop's wireless capabilities, with emphasis on large files (all those high-res photos from DSLR cameras and movies clips, or even some PDF documents) and minimizing plugging-in anything (I'd prefer nothing but charging and the occassional USB usage, if possible). Things like:

    1. Backups to a NAS drive or good website

    2. "Semi-archiving" - moving files off a laptop but able to retrieve easily without some big "restore" process

    3. Good wireless printers to recommend

    4. Streaming/saving/downloading video & other content to/from TVs, DVD players/burners, TiVo/DVRs, etc.

    5. Navigating your options regarding services/devices like Hulu, Slingbox, etc.

    6. Services/devices that allow wirless, seamless, & real-time syncing (e.g., some digital cameras w/ built-in wi-fi).

How can all of these come together to make a laptop a light, wireless multimedia workstation?
  • Joseph

I'm really interested in learning to set up different partitions on a single or multiple HDD's and the benefits to doing so Stuff like putting OS on one, programs on another, bulk storage on another. maybe if it's possible to have multiple operating systems on separate partitions that share the same files (like music, documents, videos) that are on a separate partition.

another thing I'm interested in is setting up a network with multiple devices (laptop, media desktop, ps3, 360, iphone) that can all easily share/swap/sync files either with each other or a central networked storage. i'm pretty interested in the MyBook World Edition or HP media server.
  • I discovered recently Skydur.com - a little proxy, unfortunatelly not free. I wish it is free but it's not so expensive neither - just about $5 bucks per month. I can now access all web sites again from China - youtube, twitter, facebook and hulu. Skydur is very fast and works on Windows, Mac and Linux - check it out here - Skydur.com - you won't be disappointed. Believe me I tried dozens of free proxy programs and noone worked as advertised.
