When the economy is this bad, the first expenditure put on the back burner is usually technology devices. Here at notebooks.com and gottabemobile.com, we understand the importance of staying connected while on the go no matter what the circumstance. So as part of the Gadget Stimulus Plan we launched in April, we are offering up a red refurbished Blackberry Pearl 8100. This unlocked phone comes courtesy of Geeks.com. Read on for contest entry information:

The Pearl offers Blackberry’s famous email client, web browser, a SureType QWERTY keyboard, a 2.2.5″ light-sensitive screen, a 1.3MP camera, and worldwide (quad-band) GSM antenna with EDGE connectivity for data. Being unlocked, you can use this phone on either T-mobile service or on AT&T without the need for a renewal of your contract. Just put your SIM card in and you’re ready to go!

There are three ways to enter:

1) For GBM contestants: What was your first mobile phone? Your answer should be given as a comment.

2) For Notebooks.com contestants: Have you ever bought a refurbished device? What was your experience and would you recommend refurbished products to your friends and family? Reply in the comments section.

I bought several desk tops form dell and gateway "outlet" sites, may be refurbished, may be canceled , etc. My Gateway table t pc was an outlet item as well. NO problems with any of them.
  • I buy refurb all the time, since I am a newbie geek! I tweeted my entry!

I buy refurbished from time-to-time. I had a refurb Thinkpad that lasted a couple years. I usually do okay with refurb stuff but I know what I am looking for. I would not recommend it to non-technical family and friends.

I bought a refurbished Toshiba Laptop.
When I upgraded to a new laptop it went to my daughter. Unfortunately she picked up something that blew out the hard drive. I haven't gotten around to putting in a new hard drive because it is an older model and not really into doing the work and paying the price.

I think it was either a motorola v60 or a nokia bar phone. Can't remember which one came first :p

I bought a refurbished iPod shuffle. It still works great and I use it when I run. It's small and light. I would recommend refurbished product in some cases to my friends and family.
  • My first desktop was refurbished and my current phone is a refurbished Palm Treo 750 which I got for ~ $100 from ATT's website. The phone was as good as new and no one was wiser. Therefore, I'd highly recommend refurbished items. The key is getting the refurbished item from a reputable seller.

I've bought refurbished without any problems. Usually though, they're small things like ipod accessories. For expensive stuff i prefer new even though i haven't had a bad experience. I usually look at the warranty length & price & the store selling it & decide from there.

best of luck everyone!! This is a great opportunity, thanks notebooks.com! I would love have a bb!! ;)

I bought a refurbished phone earlier. It is still serving me fine & i am happy that i purchased it.
  • Years ago, when everyone in my school thought Palm PDAs were the hot thing, I got a refurbished Sony CLIE PEG-T665C (the C is for color), which worked very well until I realized that PalmOS was losing its luster. (Now I have a Nokia E71, but who am I kidding?)

We also bought a refurbished desktop from HP a while ago, and it was kinda dead on arrival. A hard drive swap proved futile, and we had to get an entirely new unit to see some life on the screen.

I bought a refurbished Palm Lifedrive and a refurbished Creative Zen MP3 player -- both still work fine.

I bought an Ipod refurbished. Had no problems with it. It can be taking a shot in the dark. You never know what you're getting. Most of time you are encouraged to buy the extended warranty. I guess it depends on product and brand you're buying refurbished.
  • Nearly all my tech is refurbished... Flip Ultra, TC1100 (nope, that was just used), HP Slimline, etc. I think it is a great way to go. If you're buying direct from the company or a reputable reseller, it will generally come with a similar warranty as a new device so really you're in the safe zone for a much cheaper device.

I have bought refurbished computers and PDA's ... I have had mixed success and would recommend people be very careful and know what they are getting into before buying.
