Kids Prefer Aging Desktop to OLPC XO Laptop

Compact and affordable notebooks have been getting a lot of buzz lately, but you should consider your kids’ computer habits
before you buy them one. A WSJ reporter bought an OLPC XO Laptop for his kids, but they ditched it and switched back to the family’s
old desktop.

The XO Laptop was designed specifically for kids in developing nations who haven’t been spoiled with access to multiple computers and
broadband Internet access since birth. As the below video demonstrates, some children are more interested in online videos and games than the applications built for learning.

This family’s story should serve as a warning to parents who are considering buying any of the new low-cost compact notebooks hitting
the market. While specs vary, many won’t have enough power, screen real estate or storage to satisfy kids accustomed to mainstream
computers.
