Chrysler Cars Getting Internet Access

Chrysler’s going to be the first auto manufacturer to offer cars with Internet access as a dealer-installed option. Passengers will be able to connect to share the car’s Internet connection via WiFi.

Chrysler hasn’t announced what value it’s bringing beyond having WiFi in your car, or if the in-dash radio will even connect to the Internet. The service is supposed to be used by passengers only.

I remember seeing something like this at CES 2008. I don’t think this service is going to be terribly popular in the short term because it’s a mobile Internet service that isn’t really mobile. A standalone EVDO connection for your notebook costs about $60 per month, but you can take it anywhere. I would never pay that same amount, plus a hefty installation fee for mobile access if it’s tied down to my car.

Chrysler really needs a killer-app for this to take off and I don’t see a whole lot of demand for this service in its current state.
