HP Still Top Dog in Notebook Market. Acer is 2nd, Dell falls to 3rd

DisplaySearch’s quarterly notebook shipment and forecast shows the notebook market is growing rapidly, with more than 33 million sold last quarter. HP holds a solid lead with a 20.1% marketshare (6.66 million notebooks), with Acer in second place (5.25 million notebooks) and Dell in third place (4.64 million notebooks).

Acer’s selling just 100,000 less notebooks than Dell under its own brand name. But Acer recently acquired both Gateway and Packard Bell, adding more than 600,000 notebooks to its tally and surpassing Dell.

Toshiba is the fourth in DisplaySearch’s rankings and Lenovo rounds out th top five. Asustek is in eighth place with 1.56 million units for the quarter, but interest and unit sales are picking up thanks to the ASUS Eee PC. Asustek’s notebook sales accelerated than any of the larger PC companies- 50% year over year.

Apple notebook sales were up 38% compared to Q4 2006, giving the Cupertino company a 4.1% share of the notebook market.

More than 50% of notebooks sold had 15.4-inch 1280×800 displays. Just 23% of notebooks had 14.1-inch 1280×800 displays.
