Dell Inspiron & XPS Notebooks Get Wireless USB

Wireless USB Dell LogoDell’s offering Wireless USB in its XPS and Inspiron notebooks for the first time. The $150 option includes an integrated wireless USB card and a four-port Belkin Wireless USB hub.

The Wireless USB option is currently available on the Dell Inspiron 1525, XPS m1330, XPS m1530 and XPS m1720.

A Wireless USB enabled notebook allows users to connect to other Wireless USB devices at up to 480 Mbit/s.

I’m very excited about Wireless USB because it enables notebook users to go cord free and be connected to their peripherals at the same speed their used to with USB 2.0. Wireless USB will make it much easier for devices to interact with each other. Check out the below video I shot at CES 2008 of a Wireless USB Dell notebook importing photos and printing them via Wireless USB.

Unfortunately, there aren’t a whole lot of Wireless USB enabled devices out yet. This means you printer, digital camera, iPod and external hard drive will have to be tethered to the Belkin Wireless USB hub with USB wires.By the end of 2008 many Wireless USB enabled digital cameras and peripherals are expected to hit the market. This means you’ll be able to forgo a hub if you upgrade to all Wireless USB devices.

If Wireless USB is something you’re interested in, this is actually a pretty good deal. The Belkin Wireless USB hub retails for about $200 and normally comes with dongle you have to plug into your notebook. Of course, no dongle is needed when ordered as part of this package.

The Inspiron 1525 is the cheapest notebook on the market with Wireless USB, starting at just $649 with the Wireless USB hub.
