Staples Ruins Black Friday- Takes Early Orders, Sells Out Before Advertised Time

Staples Black FridayStaples ruined Black Friday for many customers who carefully planned their Black Friday purchases. Staples had widely advertised that its Black Friday specials would be available online at 6am on Black Friday, but sold out of many items before they were supposed to open.

From what we’ve gathered so far it looks like Staples allowed its customer service reps to sell Black Friday specials starting at 4am ET and sold out of them before the advertised start time of 6am E

I’m not too happy myself. I was going to purchase it online at staples.com. I had the page open ready to go when 6am EST hit. Well I went back at like 4am EST just to check and they had already sold out! What the heck?! The staples website lied about it being open at 6am. by that time, the line was too long at my local store so I totally missed out. If I would had known staples.com would had lied, I would had gone to the store earlier.

The Consumerist posted a story about another guy who wanted to buy a Black Friday GPS unit for $99, and was able to place the order, but Staples canceled it:

…Read the message and then clicked to process my order, waited a few seconds, and the magical ORDER CONFIRMATION SCREEN was displayed. Sweet! It was 6:04am and I had placed my order for the GPS. Being a crazed Black Friday shopper, I headed over to one of my favorite deal websites to see what fellow deal grabbers were saying about the $99 GPS and guess what … people had been ordering their Navigon 2100T GPS off the Staples website since around 4:00am! Even other buyers said since they couldn’t get the website the work properly they called Staples 800-number and the CSR was more than happy to process their order.

This was not fair and really shady on Staples part. I’m not sure what they can do to remedy the problem for everyone who lost out,but they should really work on this for future sale events.

Ya, Staples doesn’t care. They sold their laptops, that’s all they cared about. I called their support line to ask if they happened to have them over the phone and she said no. I then proceeded to talk about what happened on the website and she hung up on me before I could even really say much about it. Fine customer service Staples. Now I remember why I don’t shop at your store…

Yup….Staples totally ruined Black Friday for me too. I received the advertisement on Thanksgiving which stated “Sale Starts Friday 6:00am - 10:00am” for the $400 off Compaq notebook, along with other items.

Well, I excitedly rolled out of bed at 5:45, arrived at Staples at 6:05am and was told “If I didn’t have a ticket, I wouldn’t be receiving a computer.” Apparently, tickets were handed out to customers between the hours of 5:00-6:00am, and this was NOT mentioned anywhere in the advertisement whatsoever. Therefore, I was completely disappointed and mislead by Staples.

Yea staples screwed me. I waited in line at my local staples at 12 midnight, then the manger came early and told us they dont have laptop go to a different staples (i was first in line). Then i arrived at the other staples maybe 15 people deep. And they also don’t have them. No stores in los angeles county got them. I was pissed and called headquaters and talked to the president in charge. They advertised the laptop, but the stores didn’t even have them. That is BS

I was actually satisfied with the laptop. I was in Iowa. I got there about 2 am and stood in line til 5:30, they handed out tickets. I was 10th in line, so I got a ticket. I was glad for the ticket system, it was a good idea. There were about 350 people in line, I only saw about 40 laptops maybe. But you had to go in and stand in line and wait your turn (but u were guaranteed cuz u had a ticket) a guy was a few people ahead of me in the line inside, and asked for a laptop. I guess he wasnt here early enough to find out about the ticket system. He was not happy. I think its a good idea because the people who were there first standing in the cold got them. I was out there hours… and let me tell you, I was froze.

I’m having the same problem with the Compaq notebook I ordered Friday morning. I have the confirmation printed up and everything, but I get a Email this morning saying they’re sold out and not honoring my order at all.
That’s what they think. Staples and other business’ like it think they pull something like this and get away with it because nobody (i.e. the consumers) do nothing about it. Well, here’s some news for everyone - you can do something about it. Consumer Affairs, Better Business Bureau, many local news stations have “Problem Solvers” departments that may take the issue on.
Don’t get scammed! Do something about it!

IT WAS A SCAM!!!

I was able to place the order and I got the confirmation at 6:00 AM EST, but then on Monday they sent me an email saying:

Thank you for choosing Staples.

We regret to inform you that an item you tried to order from us today sold out before we were able to process your order. At this time, we are not able to offer a comparable item or to back order the product.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. At this time your order has not been processed. If you had more than one item on your order, part of your order may still be filled. You will receive a confirmation with details on how to track the status of your package if we are able to fill the remaining part of your order.

If we can be of further assistance, please contact us by either calling 800-333-3330 or by emailing support@orders.staples.com.

Sincerely,

Staples Customer Service

This issue already happened in the past and Staples had a $850,000 Penalty For Alleged Mail Order Rule Violations

Staples Laptop deal was total BS. I was at my local staples in Santa Clara (Coleman Ave) since 10:30 PM the earlier night and was within first 5 customers. Come morning the Manager came and told that deal was only for SELECT STAPLES stores.

That’s BS. We waited whole night freezing in the cold and not even single laptop. Even the first guy didn’t get any laptop. I didn’t even get $99 GPS as they seem to have only 3. This is really bad and really shows Staples doesn’t care.
I don’t trust Staples or it’s ads anymore.

Hey Max,
Thanks for posting the FTC article. Sounds like that’s exactly what should happen to Staples again this time. I’ll be looking into filing something with the FTC. I encourage anyone else who feels cheated to do the same. The more people who speak up, the more likely something can be done about it. I don’t expect to ever get that laptop for that price, but maybe we can make Staples suffer a little bit.

I purcahsed some items on the web only to find out they were out of stock and they just didn’t ship them. Had I known I would have wen to the store. I’ll try Office Depot next time.
