$100 OLPC Laptop Now $188 and Counting…
The One Laptop Per Child project’s “$100 laptop” is edging closer to $200 as component prices rise and specs are improved. According to recent reports, if the the OLPC laptop were to ship today the average cost would be around $188.
Spokesman George Snell blamed the increase on a variety of factors, including currency fluctuations and rising costs of such components as nickel and silicon. He said the project was committed to keeping the price from rising above $190.
The OLPC sees $100 per laptop as a long term goal, but these obstacles may push the timeline out further than anyone expected.
