Apple Recalls 1.8 Million Powerbook and iBook Batteries

Apple now has more in common with Dell than running Intel Core Duos. Apple is recalling 1.8 million lithium-ion notebook batteries, which like Dell’s are manufactured by Sony.  Apple has received nine reports of batteriesoverheating, including two reports of minor burns from handling overheatedcomputers and other reports of minor property damage.

The recalled 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook batteries were sold from 2003 through this month.

According to the company, userrs should stop using the recalled batteries immediately and contact Apple to arrange for a replacement battery, free of charge. After removing the recalled battery from their iBook or PowerBook, consumers should plug in the AC adapter to power the computer until a replacement battery arrives.

Contact Apple at (800) 275-2273 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Central Time or go to http://support.apple.com/batteryprogram/
